Kelly's Favorite Albums from 2007 (and some from 2006)
January 10th, 2008 (Tuesday) 1 pm

Now - this list isn't very long, but I have a tendency to purchase individual songs from artists a lot more frequently than I do with full length albums. I plan on compiling a list of my top favorite songs of 2007, ALSO i have decided to take the risk and make my solid top 25 favorite songs of all time. - which i fear is a dangerous decision, but I am willing to take the chance. So look for that soon.
~ Ma FLeur - The Cinematic Orchestra

Rather somber, but not without a great feeling of hope and redemption, this collection of songs from one of my favorite jazz/electronic groups is stunning. Check here for 2 great live cuts from the Live EP
~ This Binary Universe - BT
http://www.thisbinaryuniverse.com

I was never a fan of BT in the mid-90s, having only heard of him then because of my huge Tori Amos obsession at the time and knowing she did a song with him. I found this Album to be quite up my alley. All the songs are incredibly long and atmospheric. They are epic journeys. The accompanying videos that came with the album are beautiful and haunting. Check out the trailer on stage 6.
~ The Con - Tegan and Sara

These girls are awesome. They make such strange vocal choices on some of the words they say, its very refreshing. Check out their MySpace page to hear some of the songs from this album.
~ Out of the Woods - Tracy Thorn
http://www.traceythorn.com/traceythorn.html

One half of Everything But the Girl, This solo release is quite lovely. I don't know why , but when I listen to this I am reminded of songs by both Carly Simon and Laura Nyro. Tracy seems to be very honest about her feelings and her life on this album. I want to give her a hug.
~ Andorra - Caribou
http://www.caribou.fm

Previous releases by this group suggests to me that the album that will follow Andorra wont be anything like it, as it is so different from other heavy electronic pop and clicks i have by them in my library. This album sounds as though someone found an unreleased collection of a group from the mid 1960s and dusted it off. It has a retrospective appeal and psychedelic quality that makes you want to visit a head shop on the west coast and watch a lava lamp bubble in the background. Here is a link to some great live renditions.
~ Human Engine - John Beltran

I have another album by this artist and its completely different than this one. Ethereal hammering on keyboards and whispy vocal notes hide in the backgrounds and make this a great collection of songs to get some good thought worked out while listening to it.
~ Bring Me the Workhorse - My Brightest DIamond

Another one from ‘06, but worth mentioning. This album is very dark and the vocals of Shara Worden are quite haunting and slightly butt-kickin. You can stream the album here. |
Our Baby is a Spasmatic Super Hero.
January 8th, 2008 (Tuesday) 3:27 pm

Well, we found out that our kid's going to be a boy! One Milo Sparks Kerrigan coming up! I love that name. It's so "super hero's real name". Like, it's his real name that he hides from the bad guys. It sounds like he can shoot electricity out of his eyes, which I'm pretty sure he'll be able to do. He's the fifth member of the Fantastic Four.
So, a story.
We had two names picked out. One for a girl, and one for a boy. The girl's was Sophia Apple (and to heck with Gwyneth Paltrow! She stole our baby name! Just kidding. We love Gwyneth. I'm just sayin she's a name thief.), and the boy's was Milo Sparks. We've had these names picked out for seventeen forevers.
So Kell starts poking around on the net, and she comes up with...
Milo = the modern Greek word for Apple (Look near the bottom).
As in... Sophia Apple.
And we didn't know that.
Um... what?
Milo = Apple.
(the satellites are reading our thoughts, zomg, get the tinfoil hats!)
Score one point for Carl Jung and the collective unconscious.
This only proves that our kid is a super-cool rock star and everything he does will be pure poetry. Or something.
Zomg, we're having a kid.
Anyway, welcome to the blog!
